Late Autumn Lawn Care – What to Do Before Winter Sets In
- May 1

As May arrives, winter is just around the corner. Growth has slowed significantly, and many homeowners start wondering: “Should I still be doing anything to my lawn, or just leave it until spring?”
The truth is, May is your last chance to prepare your lawn properly before winter dormancy.
What Happens to Your Lawn in May?
By late autumn:
Grass growth is minimal
Soil temperatures are dropping
Nutrient uptake slows down
Recovery from damage becomes limited
Both Kikuyu and LM grass are preparing to “rest” through winter, so your goal is to lock in health now.
Final Mow Before Winter
Give your lawn one of its last mows of the season:
Keep Kikuyu at around 4–5 cm
Keep LM grass slightly higher at 5–6 cm
Avoid cutting too short, longer blades protect roots and reduce winter stress.
Clean-Up is Key
Fallen leaves and debris can:
Block sunlight
Trap moisture
Encourage fungal growth
Regularly clear your lawn to keep it clean and breathable going into winter.
Reduce Watering Further
As temperatures drop:
Water less frequently
Only water when the soil is dry
Overwatering in May can lead to root rot and disease, especially in shaded areas.
Strengthen, Don’t Stimulate
Avoid strong fertilisers at this stage. Instead:
Focus on soil conditioning
Use compost if needed (light application)
The goal is to support root health, not push new growth.
✅ May Lawn Rule
In May, your lawn care shifts from growth to protection and preservation. A well-prepared lawn now will survive winter better and recover faster in spring.
